A planned Soviet-era town in the pine forest
Built in the 1970s for workers at the Ignalina nuclear plant, Visaginas is unlike anywhere else in Lithuania: laid out in the forest, largely Russian-speaking, and increasingly visited since the plant featured in the Chernobyl series.

Travel tips
- Plant tours require booking weeks ahead and photo ID — do not turn up on spec.
- Russian is widely spoken; Lithuanian and English less so.
- The border zone near the lake is restricted in places — follow signage.
